The Mysterious Case of the Missing Crime Writer
Ragnar Jonasson
One winter evening, bestselling Icelandic crime author Elín S. Jónsdóttir goes missing. Famous for writing a series of ten brilliant crime novels before suddenly retiring - there seems to be no reason for her to vanish. There are no clues to her disappearance and it is up to young detective, Helgi, to crack the case before it's leaked to the press. Helgi himself is a fan of crime fiction (and owns a bookshop!) and the book is filled with references to classic crime novels. As he interviews the people closest to her – a publisher, an accountant, a retired judge, Helgi realises that Elin’s life was not quite as straightforward as one may have expected. While there are multiple timelines in the book and you go back and forth a lot, the author handles these well and at no point does it become hard to keep track of. And while he is knee deep in this case, Helgi also has his own personal (and not very pleasant) issues to sort through.
The book is a follow up to Death at the Sanatorium (which also features Helgi)but it can be read as a standalone novel.
