Assembly

Natasha Brown

This is a slim powerhouse of a novel about race, class, and identity. The narrator is an unnamed Black British woman working in a high paying job in finance. The narrative unfolds in a fragmented, stream-of-consciousness style, as she dissects the subtle and overt ways systemic inequalities manifest in her personal and professional life. As she prepares to attend a lavish party at her white boyfriend’s family estate, she reflects on the “assembly” of her own identity – the careful navigation of predominantly white spaces, the pressure to assimilate, and the constant micro-aggressions she experiences.
