A Matter of Death and Life
Andrey Kurkov
Pick it up: If you like surreal and darkly comic novels with bizarre situations (trying to outwit the contract killer that you hired to kill you, certainly qualifies).
The protagonist in this novel is stuck in a bad phase in his life, his marriage has broken down, and his life seems to lack purpose. In a moment of despair and wanting to end his life but lacking the courage to do the deed himself, he hires a contract killer, whom he only contacts and pays via a mailbox, to do it for him. However, he quickly regrets his decision, leading to a bizarre and darkly humorous cat-and-mouse game. At just about a hundred pages, this is an enjoyable read that you can finish in a single sitting.
