The Hundred-Year-Old Man wHO climbed Out of The Window and Disappeared
Jonas Jonasson
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared is a darkly comedic and entertaining novel that begins on Allan Karlsson's 100th birthday. Residing in a nursing home, Allan, despite his age, is far from ready to settle down. Just as the local mayor and press are arriving to celebrate his centennial, Allan simply slips out of his window and shuffles off in his slippers, embarking on an unexpected and hilarious adventure.
His escapade quickly escalates when he inadvertently absconds with a suitcase full of drug money belonging to a group of dangerous criminals. This sets off a comical chase across Sweden, involving a quirky cast of characters including a hot-dog stand owner, a beautiful but volatile woman, an elephant, and a perpetually confused police inspector.
Interwoven with Allan's present-day caper are flashbacks to his extraordinary past. It turns out Allan has lived a life of astonishing historical significance, often unwittingly influencing major global events. From dining with President Truman to advising Chairman Mao, from escaping a Gulag to befriending both General Franco and Robert Oppenheimer, Allan's unassuming presence has consistently put him at the heart of the 20th century's most pivotal moments. His simple, often naive approach to life, coupled with his knack for explosives (a skill he picked up early on), has landed him in one unbelievable situation after another.
