The Door to Door Bookstore

Carston Henn

The Door-to-Door Bookstore (originally published as Der kleine Buchladen der einsamen Herzen in German) celebrates the power of books and the magic of human connection. It tells the story of Carl Kollhoff, a man in his early seventies who works in a traditional, old-fashioned bookstore in a bustling city. Every evening, after the bookstore closes, Carl meticulously packs a bag of hand-selected books and delivers them by foot to his loyal customers, whom he affectionately calls his "Night Owls." These aren't just transactions; for Carl, it's about matching the perfect book to the right person, often intuitively understanding what they need even before they do. His Night Owls are a diverse and quirky group, each with their own unique lives and struggles, and Carl's deliveries bring not just literature, but also comfort, companionship, and a sense of routine to their solitary lives.

Carl's quiet, predictable routine is charmingly disrupted when a feisty and curious nine-year-old girl named Sascha insists on accompanying him on his rounds. Initially reluctant, Carl gradually allows Schascha into his world, and her youthful energy, insightful questions, and innocent observations begin to open Carl's eyes to new possibilities and rekindle his own sense of wonder.

As they navigate the city streets and interact with the Night Owls, Carl and Schascha form an unlikely but deep bond. The novel explores themes of loneliness, the comfort of routine, the power of storytelling, and the joy of intergenerational friendships. It's a gentle reminder that books can connect people in unexpected ways, and that even the most solitary lives can be enriched by human connection.
